We were originally tasked with helping to create a backyard oasis in the ‘burbs of South Salt Lake. With the yard renovation in full swing, we also helped with a few internal updates to the home gym and adjacent guest suite.
For their guest suite, our clients were excited to “go bold”. We landed first on this incredible wallcovering from Made of Matter - a collage of Grecian-inspired sculpture and colorful flora. We are big fans of Made of Matter, not just for their incredibly unique and dream-like prints, but also because of their commitment to sustainability. They implement sustainable paper sourcing, plastic free packaging, non-PVC materials, and print using eco-friendly inks.
For the exterior, we partnered with Laurie VanZandt of The Ardent Gardener Landscape Design and Kyzer Construction. Our team worked together to create a sense of wild, while also keeping things contained and tidy. We started out by mapping the concrete patios, steel planter boxes, and gravel pathways. Each element was structured in perfect rectangles from which the foliage would then grow and expand from.
The outdoor furniture and fireplace are from Restoration Hardware.
Throw pillows are from Sien + Co.
The entire deck was structurally unsound and was no longer up to code. We opted for a darker trex and a simple steel and cable handrail. By planning for and adding mood lighting throughout - it really helped to elevate the entire space. We also knew that we wanted to have a fountain, so we created a raised planter box off the lower portion of the deck to house her.
The new plan also features a three-tiered space plan. The upper deck is for the BBQ and smaller cafe table for morning coffee, the lower deck has a dining table for larger gatherings, and the lowest level is home to the fire pit and lounge.
We focused on adding warmth and depth to the home gym, while still keeping it functional. The goal was to create a space that felt intentional, rather than a bare room with some exercise equipment parked in it.
Here, you can see the full design of the guest suite. We purchased an inexpensive upholstered bed that had storage underneath and had it reupholstered in this amazing coral boucle from Pierre Frey.
The walls, night stands, and custom closet system are all painted using Backdrop paint. We love using backdrop, not just for their incredible branding and sense of humor, but also because their high quality paints are low VOC, low odor, smooth like butter, and easy to clean. The night stands are painted in Color of the Year - a collab between Backdrop and Coming Soon New York (another fave of ours).
For the guest suite, we wanted to create a hotel-like closet system for overnight guests. An upholstered bench lifts up for extra storage, while a fully custom brass hanging rod is curved to match above. Finally, the oversized hardware on the cabinet door opens to reveal a bevy of shelves inside.
